Mayor Mantello and County Executive McLaughlin Announce Revival of Knickerbacker Ice Rink

Troy, NY (May 2) – Mayor Mantello and County Executive McLaughlin announced today that the ‘Knick’ is coming back to Troy.

The City of Troy and Rensselaer County are partnering to bring back the Knickerbacker Ice Rink. In 2018, the City shut down the arena due to maintenance issues related to the ice-making equipment and failed piping. With the county’s $2 million ARPA contribution, the City of Troy will be able to fulfill the Knickerbacker Arena’s original purpose as an ice rink.

Mayor Carmella Mantello stated, “This project with the Knickerbacker Ice Rink is another key step in improving the quality of life for Troy and Rensselaer County residents. The revival of the Knick pool and now the rink will transform the Knickerbacker Park Complex, which will include more public skating. Thank you to the County Executive for his and the county’s partnership as we continue to revitalize Troy.”

“We are bringing back hockey and skating to the Knickerbacker ice rink, which makes this a great day in Rensselaer County and Troy. The Knick ice rink has been closed for too long and the county and city are coming together to reopen the rink,” said County Executive Steve McLaughlin.

The Knickerbacker Ice Rink will be completed as a multi-phase project:
Phase 1: Re-open the rink

  • Expediting the renovation of the rink

  • Upgrade failed equipment to meet modern environmental requirements

  • Recommission HVAC and dehumidification systems

  • Refresh bathrooms

  • Other potential additions include a new scoreboard, sound system, lighting and other amenities to improve the overall experience

Phase 2: Transform Troy – Knickerbacker Park

  • Add amenities such as concessions, weight room, etc.

  • Improve the experience for the community

  • Create a facility/park to support new activities and expanding interests

Mayor Mantello said, "This demonstrates the effectiveness of collaboration between the city and county. This is like a power-play for the residents who have been asking for years when the puck will drop next at the Knick.”

“There is a strong legacy of youth hockey and community hockey leagues in our county, but unfortunately, a lack of rinks is forcing many to get their ice time in other communities. Revitalizing the Knickerbacker Park ice rink means more opportunity for games, drills and open skate sessions for years to come,” said County Executive Steve McLaughlin.
